rampolokeng
soweto, south africa, 1965
he is one of the most committed and recognised poets in africa today. he belongs to the so-called "children of soweto" generation, who demonstrated against apartheid together with the black consciousness movement. his committed voice lashes against the audience with verbal fire due to his experience. he is strongly influenced by jamaican dub poets such as linton kwesi johnson and mutabaraka, rap from black ghettos in the u.s. and england, street poetry emerged in the 70's in soweto and the african spoken word tradition. furthermore, it must be high-lightened that he is considered one of the few city poets, meaning poets deeply influenced by their living in big cities. from the 90's onwards he has been increasingly acknowledged especially in europe, where he has been performing frequently -he was in barcelona two times, in 1997 taking part in the translit contest and 1999 in the poetry festival. among his published work we would like to stress horns for hondo (1991), talking rain (1993), end beginnings (1993, cd with the kalahari surfers), rap masters supreme - word bomber in the extreme: lesego rampolokeng (1996) and half ranthology (2003, cd).
